An experienced gastroenterologist with extensive expertise in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, including colonoscopy and gastroscopy.
Dr Thompson is dedicated to patient-centred care — making sure you receive a thorough assessment, clear communication and a treatment plan built around you. His approach pairs clinical excellence with genuine compassion, so you feel informed, reassured and confident every step of the way.
Having founded and led both Gold Coast Endoscopy and The Gastrointestinal Centre — and developed Pacific Private Hospital in Southport and Tweed Day Surgery — he has now returned to solo practice through Gold Coast Endoscopy, bringing decades of experience to your care.

Whether something simply doesn't feel right or you already know you need a procedure, we make the next step clear — and help you reach answers without the long wait.
If you're dealing with reflux, IBS, coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, persistent abdominal pain or a change in bowel habits, you can see a specialist about it directly — for a clear diagnosis and a plan to manage it.
Our consultation service excludes hepatology (liver disease).
When your GP is concerned and you need answers quickly, there's no waiting weeks for a separate specialist appointment first. With our open-access service, a referral is all it takes to be fast-tracked straight to your diagnostic procedure — and you'll still consult with your gastroenterologist on the day, immediately beforehand.
Our open-access endoscopy service excludes haemorrhoid banding.
A colonoscopy examines the bowel and a gastroscopy examines the oesophagus, stomach and upper digestive tract, with small tissue samples taken if needed. Precise, comfortable procedures that turn uncertainty into a clear diagnosis.
Many problems are treated during the procedure itself. Smaller polyps are usually removed on the spot — before they can turn into cancer — without open surgery.
Larger or flatter lesions (endoscopic mucosal resection), or narrowed areas of the oesophagus that make swallowing difficult (oesophageal dilatation), take more time and carry risks worth talking through first. These may be planned as a separate appointment, but are still generally treated without open surgery when it’s safe to do.

The principles behind every appointment, every procedure and every conversation.
Every decision starts with your symptoms, your worries and your goals — never a one-size-fits-all pathway.
Your procedure happens at a fully accredited private hospital or day surgery, with sedation administered by an anaesthetist and rigorous safety standards.
Thorough assessment, plain-English explanations and prompt reporting — so you are never left wondering.
